Domingos Xavier Viegas

Domingos X. Viegas is a Full Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. 
He is the Director of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics (ADAI) and of its Centre for Forest Fire Research (CEIF). ADAI is integrated in the Associate Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aeronautics (LAETA) that is registered as a research Unit at the National Science Foundation.
Domingos Viegas started to develop research activity in the fields of fire behaviour and fire safety in 1985.
He created the Forest Fire Research Laboratory (LEIF) that is equipped with original test rigs to perform research on fire behaviour and fire safety. His team participated in more than sixty research projects, half of them with international co-funding and organized eight International Conferences on Forest Fire Research and several Seminars and training courses about forest fires.
He authored more than seventy articles in peer reviewed journals and was a Lecturer at several International Conferences and Post-Graduation Courses.
He was a member of Enquiry Committees and witness expert in forest fires related incidents and accidents in Portugal, Spain, Australia and Israel.
He was invited by the Portuguese Government to study and report on large forest fires and related accidents that occurred in Portugal in 2012, in 2013, the Pedrógão Fires and October Fires in 2017.
In 2017 Domingos Viegas received The IAWF Wildland Fire Safety Award for the significant contribution to wildland firefighter safety through wildland fire research.
